Historical Festival, Defense of Taganrog, Gathered over 30,000 Viewers

The third international festival of the Defense of Taganrog took place in Taganrog. Re-enactors recreated events of the heroic defense of the town in 1855. Back then, the British and the French, blocking supplies of weapons and food to Crimea, attempted to seize Taganrog, as depots to supply Sevastopol were located there. The town strongly retaliated against the enemy and was not conquered. The answer to the enemy made a timeless mark in the history of Russia: “Russians never abandon their cities!”

The three-day festival started, when Taganrog plunged into the times, when ladies walked along the streets wearing hoop skirts, a wind band performed on the embankment, and plying boys sold newspapers, crying out headlines. Theater actors that performed in special places helped to feel the atmosphere of the old town.

The first day of the festival was marked with a sailing race and historical races to celebrate the seizure of the English gunboat, HMS Jasper, by Cossacks. This event made it into history as the only case in the world, when the horse cavalry secured an enemy’s vessel in the sea.

The second day started with the battle of the Fog Bell. The central event of the festival was a large-scale sea and ground re-enactment of the defense of Taganrog on the city’s embankment. Thirty military history clubs took part in it. The festival continued with a festive march, proclamation of the tsar’s letter missive, which the city received for the feat and courage it had showed, when it held off the enemy’s attack, followed with floral offerings to the monument celebrating the 300th anniversary of Taganrog.

The festival finished the next day with sailing races, Seizure of HMS Jasper.
